How I feel for the old time prospectors. Cotton this, flannel that, and what’s a wetsuit. Calloused hands, worn clothes, and sun baked skin were the tell tale signs that the guy in the water with the pan knew what he was doing. As much as I respect and hold allot of respect for what the old timers did as they worked dawn to dusk, I thank everything above me that the times have changed.
And best of all, so has the gear.
Sure, if you want to wear a beat up straw hat and smell like a locker room you can. However more and more, finding someone who makes a good hobby, or even a living prospecting has become more difficult. Sport Tek shorts have replaced the old thick jeans. New multi purpose sports shoes have replaced the old donkey skin shoes that could handle everything but water. Old hats that held as many life forms as a rain forest have been kicked aside for new caps and UV blocking sunglasses. Poorly handmade duffels have been pushed aside for new backpacks that can hold more than we weigh and are way more comfortable.
